cifs vs webdav

hi every one:
Im using webdav for sharing files in a company.but now they need checkin/checkout mechanism.
I know ,need cifs porotocol for this purpose,but before implmenting it I have some questions:
1-with cifs porotocol can we open office documents?
2-some users complaint about cifs speed?
3-is there any way to add checkin/checkout mechanism to web dav porotocol?

3 no.   Although you can check out with the Sharepoint protocol which is an extension to WebDAV.

I read in forums that cifs working in Windows 7 is unreliable,others say Its working so slow or implementing cifs is difficult,now I'm realy amazed what to do?in fact which protocol is the best and easiest for end users to use?
