CIFS troubles

I'm really at a loss here, I spent this weekend playing with Alfresco and I can't even get the simplest of things to work… namely CIFS.  I installed this on a Windows machine.  I created a browse space via the web client, now I want that browse space to appear as a CIFS share… I've read lots of docs, I've searched this forum, I've watched webinars, I've poked around with the two file-server.xxxx files.  It looks like it should be enabled by default….  I'm just not getting what I need to do to turn it on and be able to share that browse space out.

It's like I'm getting TOO MUCH info, some of it depricated, and it's all confusing me.  Being a windows guy, all these config files are pretty overwhelming, but I've played with JBoss applications before and do have some experience with them, so it's not rocket science.  Is there a nice simple UP TO DATE doc that basically says 'DO THIS' to turn it on without trying to document every option available?  Thanks!

I'm setting up a new instance of XP Pro SP3 x32 now under Hyper-V to give this thing its own home.  Hopefully the Hyper-V part isn't going to be an issue.

ha, installed it on XP and while a 'net view' doesnt show the machine, if i try to connect to it, it exists.  so dunno why it didn't work in the other two OS, but it worked immediately in XP Pro SP3 x32.
Thanks for the help, now to go on to the next steps.

I'm still having some problems….  I'm now running into problems connecting to the share.

I can't do a 'net view' of \\alfrescoA because I get an "error 5" - security issue which I expect, just mentioning it to demonstrate the name now exists

C:\>net view \\alfrescoa
System error 5 has occurred.

Access is denied.

So, I just try to connect with admin/admin

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test /user:admin
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.
Enter the password for 'admin' to connect to 'alfrescoa': admin
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

I also created a new user within alfresco, name/pw of test/test and assigned it as a manager to the test shared site I created and get the same errors

Also if I try to "view in CIFS" via the Alfresco Explorer, it pulls up a windows login dialog box where username is prepopulated with ALFRESCO\Guest and cannot be changed.  I am logged into the Explorer as Admin.

Try using

net use

to see if you have any stale connections

and

net use /delete \\sharename

to delete them

Make sure you are at least using credentials that work to log in to alfresco.

did that already

C:\>net use
New connections will be remembered.

There are no entries in the list.

admin/admin works to log in

why is it attempting to use ALFRESCO\Guest by default anyway?  I've tried logging in as ADMIN and ALFRESCOA\ADMIN

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfrescoa, press ENTER, or type a new user name: alfrescoa\admin
Enter the password for alfrescoa:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfrescoa, press ENTER, or type a new user name: admin
Enter the password for alfrescoa:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Try logging in as ALFRESCO\admin

I see you have set the domain to ALFRESCO.

There is no "domain" in the context of what a Windows "domain" is.

The XP machine is a stand alone machine, ie, workgroup configured rather than part of a domain.  I named the XP machine ALFRESCO.

If I were to attempt to login as ALFRESCO\admin, wouldn't that be trying to use a Windows based credential rather than an alfresco credential?

ALFRESCOA points to the ALFRESCOA instance….

nevertheless, here we go:

C:\>net use * \\alfresco\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfresco\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfresco, press ENTER, or type a new user name: admin
Enter the password for alfresco:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

C:\>net use * \\alfresco\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfresco\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfresco, press ENTER, or type a new user name: alfresco\admin
Enter the password for alfresco:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

C:\>net use * \\alfresco\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfresco\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfresco, press ENTER, or type a new user name: alfrescoa\admin
Enter the password for alfresco:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

I also tried the same three logins for \\alfrescoa\test

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfrescoa, press ENTER, or type a new user name: admin
Enter the password for alfrescoa:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfrescoa, press ENTER, or type a new user name: alfresco\admin
Enter the password for alfrescoa:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

C:\>net use * \\alfrescoa\test
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa\test.

To connect ALFRESCO\Guest to alfrescoa, press ENTER, or type a new user name: alfrescoa\admin
Enter the password for alfrescoa:
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Now wait a minute here!

What on earth is \\alfrescoa\test ?

When did you create a test share and how?

Lets rewind and just do this

net use \\alfrescoa /user:admin

Then go to \\alfrescoa in Windows explorer

See the list of share names available and drill into one.

Ah…. er…. I thought when I created a 'space' it was assigned a windows share name….  I was extremely hopeful that what you just had me try would make me smack my head and go 'DUH', but alas….

C:\>net use \\alfrescoa /user:admin
The password or user name is invalid for \\alfrescoa.

Enter the password for 'admin' to connect to 'alfrescoa':
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

As you can see from the image, I am logged into admin successfully, so I'm not imagining that admin/admin works Smiley Happy

OK I've done a few experiments myself and with the "out of the box" configuration I can't get a "net use" command to succeed to connect to Alfresco. Maybe it's because I'm disconnected from a domain today or because I haven't disabled the local SMB server. But anyway, provided that "net use" doesn't list any connections to Alfresco, I find that this always works

Go to

\\servernameA

in windows Explorer

It will prompt you for username and password

enter these (without a prefixed domain name)

and you will see the shares, which you can then mount.

I'm not sure what is going on and I'll have to ask those who know!
