change alf_data location

in the server where is installed alfresco 4.0.b the drive C: i allmost full
and the drive E:  has a lot of space so
i'd wont to move the alf_data folder to E:
i had stopped alfresco service in manager tool
then i have opened the file alfresco-global.properties
in C:\Alfresco\tomcat\shared\classes
and i have changet
dir.root=
in
dir.root=E:/Alfresco/alf_data

then I tried to ristartare services

but the service dont start

i have done something wrong ?

where ifind the log ?
what is the log file name ?

  I have requirement like how can i run 2 alfresco instances one data for both instances is there any possibility in alfresco please help me.

My suggestion, instead of chaning the properties file, why not try the following method
—
Disable solr in properties file, stop, start , then stop
take the back of alf_dir and databases
install new instance on E drive,give the same database parameter do not start(at the time it ask) the instance when the installation is over.
copy alf_dir from the backup to the new installation, do not copy any directory other than "contentstore" and  "contentstore.deleted"
start the service
You have now your instance running in E drive with all your previous files

I installed 4.2a alfresco version on my system then due to error in the system,
1)I copied full folder of alfresco with the alf_data folder
then
2)After reinstalling the fresh copy of alfresco in the system i copied the previous version alf_folder in the alfresco,I started the services for the first time but it sometime does not start the tomcat and postgre
and sometime if it starts it does not configure the old data like the authenticaion.
