Cannot trigger email after putting file in webdav folder

I tried to do this:
1. Create a rule in a space so that when new items are in the space, an email is sent to users.
2. I added a network space to create a webdav folder, browsed to the folder and put a file inside.
3. I can see the file in the Alfresco web client but I don't receive any email.
4. But when I create new content in the space from within the web client, I can receive email.

How can I get the email to be sent when a file is deposited in the webdav folder?

I am replying to my own question:
It works. I should not run the rule in the background, so that the mail gets sent immediately.
