hi,

i am wondering if we can use catogory service out of the box as a tags now being used in flicker (photos).

if we can, can we search by catogory name when the aspect name is diffreent from catogory name.

what do i mean by tagging?

Think of a tag as a simple category name. People can categorize their posts, photos, and links with any tag that makes sense so that later thay can be searched using the tag name.

Hi,

Yes, you probably could use the category service for tagging but the experience would be different than that used for flickr, del.icio.us et. al.

The category service is a used more for hierarchical taxonomies. Furthermore, categories are defined as nodes in the repository so you would need to use the web client UI or some API to create a new tag, which doesn't really natural for the type of tagging you are looking for.

I would suggest adding an aspect that has a single property which could store your tags. This property will be indexed and therefore searchable. You could add the property to the advanced search screen to make it easy to search too, have a look at the web client config guide on how to do this.

We support multiple valued properties in the model, which would probably be ideal for this, but the client does not allow editing of these currently (not until 1.3) so for now you would probably have to go for a space separated list.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Could you elaborate on what you mean by…

but if we were to provide tagging service like flicker and del.icio.us on top of alfresco? how can we do that even if it not practical for now.

We are currently planning to release 1.3 at the end of April.

i mean to say

how can we provide tagging to the users (on top of alfresco) like flicker.

my question is can we provide tagging service like catogory service on top of alfresco.

if we can provide (right now) how ?

if we cannot provide tagging out of the box right now? what more services are need before we can do that.

thanks prasanth.

OK, I see what you mean.

Sure, it's certainly possible to provide a tagging service on top of alfresco. However, all the things you would need to do are already available from the existing services.

For example, to add an aspect and set the property on the aspect can be done via the node service and searching for nodes with certain tags can be done with the search service. You may however want to have an API above these services that your application uses.

The current web client is a good example of using the repository service APIs.

Hope this helps.
