Auditing/Versioning of Metadata

Question: Is there a simple way to maintain multiple versions of metadata over time for a specific content item?

I presume Alfresco by default stores only the current metadata for the item.

the possible scenarios we might need to consider are:
- store the metadata once for each version of document
- allow versions (audit trail) of meta-data per version
- have meta-data audit trail for document independent of document version

any thoughts out there?
