Allowed Number of CIFS Connections

Hi All;

I've been experiencing a problem where a few users seem to be running out of connections to our Alfresco CIFS share. We're running Community 2.1 on SLED 10 and have been running it for several months quite happily. We're using NTLM authentication for both web access as well as CIFS and apart from a couple of snags, this has been running quite well.

I noticed that this same problem has been covered here http://forums.alfresco.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6625 as well as in a couple of other posts, but I haven't found a solution for it anywhere.

The most recent user of mine who has discovered this is running XP SP2 and has our CIFS share mapped as a drive letter onto her machine. She gets a Windows error that claims "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.". This particular user has become one of our most active Alfresco users and has been able to duplicate this consistently. She is transferring PDF documents into folders that she is creating in the CIFS share. She has discovered that she is able to transfer 14 documents and then receives this error when she tries to transfer the 15th. Logging out of Windows and back in again resolves this. The problem also seems to occur when she is rapidly changing directories on the CIFS share. When doing this she is able to switch through 24 directories and then receives the same error when she accesses the 25th. As in the previous case when she logs out of Windows and back in again this problem clears up. In an interesting aside, this same user frequently works as our receptionist in addition to doing her regular job. When she is sitting at the reception desk, she does other tasks in between phone calls. She has found that there doesn't appear to be any restrictions to affect her work transferring files into Alfresco when she is working at the computer on the reception desk, this only happens to her when she is working at her own computer.

If I've missed the solution in my searching, I apologize for bringing this up again but if someone has any help to offer I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Cyber-Wizard,

have you found a solution yet?

We are also running into the same error (XPSP3, Alfresco community 2.1 on Ubuntu 8.0.4) on all machines here.

No the solution never did present itself. I'm not certain if the user just stopped posting so many files at a time, or if the problem cleared up on it's own. I haven't heard anything about it from any of my users since a few days after posting the issue(and I haven't really gone looking for it either).

OK, I think the problem was that M$ has lowered the number of concurrent TCP/IP connection in SP2 & SP3 to 10 for some strange reason.
I've used this patch http://hwrms.com/blog/?p=17 to increase the number to 800.
It looks like it is working now.
