Alfresco with existing Samba shares?

Greetings,
We currently implement a samba file share system (using the Ontario municipal fileplan structure) with users saving documents to particular shares.
Is it possible to configure Alfresco to use these existing shares for document file locations instead of the alf_data directory?

The folder structure you see in Alfresco is virtual, so it does not at all correspond how things are stored in the backend.
The Cifs interface can provide the same functionality as a samba share. And a little more. So if you want to migrate your samba share to Alfresco, do that using drag & drop to Alfresco CIFS.
