Admin interface doesn't look like the tutorials

Ok I'm using the very latest Alfresco Community Edition and have been attempting to follow the youtube tutorials step by step and I think when I first installed the newest version that the Admin interface looked the same as the tutorials. So I've managed to make a collaboration site, users, user groups, and add users. HOWEVER I now have had enough. I can't use the tutorials since I simply cannot find where and how to add users permissions to the database. I'm at my wit's end.
Is there a reset switch to make the Admin user match the tutorials or am is the newer version simply different and I'm remembering incorrectly?
Any ideas at this point as to how to follow the tutorials – even if it means uninstalling the latest version and installing the one in the tutorials is fine. I just need to finish setting things up so I can understand the entire app.
Thanks a million for whoever may have any idea what silly simple step I am missing here.

Well your question needs a little clarification. Are you wanting users to have different permissions on the database….OR Permission levels on a site that you have created? Those are two entirely different things.

Hi thanks for responding:
In this tutorial entitled: “Alfresco Community Edition How to Create Groups” at this location:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=napOIhraqvE&list=PLyJdWuUHM3igEvYxno-0-hD-0S794_Mq0
at timeline marker 02:04 - the instructor in the tutorial says:
“now that we have a group, we can now add them to permissions on a folder'
he clicks on this little button at the top that says “repository”
my point is, there is no such button entitled “repository” that i have found yet.
I have encountered this issue more than once on this version. But THIS time, I have looked all through every button and location and simply cannot find the button entitled “repository” I know it's in there. It must be because the software is all working.
So do i need to reset the desktop icons or something? Or am i using a different version from the tutorial? I downloaded the very latest one. I cannot answer your question furthur past that point becuase I am attempting to rigidly follow the steps accordingly. So i don't know the answer to the question becuase I haven't finished the tutorial.
..there is one possiblity I may have egregiously overlooked: HENCE;  If i am using the wrong tutorials, for the latest version, then please help guide me to the correct ones for the latest 64 bit community version and I'll watch those. Other than that, I have no idea why this button has evaded me. lol.
Thanks again for your time, patience, and prompt response.

My assumption is that you are using 4.2d or E which is the latest community release. Which you can find here http://docs.alfresco.com/4.2/index.jsp

To help you better can you provide your installation setup. OS, version of Alfresco, etc…

Thanks again.
It's alfresco community 4.2e 64bit on Linux Mint 16 Mate Desktop.

Have you added any files or folders to a site? I'm using 4.2d which is really similar to 4.2e and repository is at the top menu bar.

The only thing I've added is a couple of avatar icons, two groups, three test users, and I have made it as far as the video tutorial would let me go based on the version being used during the time it was recorded. I have even logged in from three other computers from behind my router, so i've gotten that far. any suggestions you have I'm willing to try throughout the night and the weekend until I get past this little missing button issue.
-maybe in the latest version, they moved that icon. it seems the entire desktop looks a bit different. maybe. ..they just rearranged everything in this version?..when i get back to the computer a little later, I'll send you a screenshot of what I am seeing compared to what the instructor was seeing.

I think you aren't going to see repository until you actually create a site go to the document library and then add folder and files. It could be a simple text file and go from there.

If you are using the "very latest version" thats 4.2e and if you are using the default installation then you are using the "Light Theme" in which case you will not have screens in Share that look anything like the videos.

The link you seek is on a black ribbon toolbar just under the browser toolbar and it looks like the attached png.

thank you. but the only tool bar at the top has these hyperlink words:

"Company Home, My Home, Guest Home, My Alfresco"

perhaps i half awake and said yes or no to some startup prompt and forgot about it? I have a bad habit of not paying full attention when the coffee hasn't peaked lol
Is there a reset to original desktop maybe, OR did i not install something at original install? As far as i know the version is the stable version of 4.2e
-and to be honest I'd rather follow the tutorials correctly all the way to the end. but it's not possible with this particular setup. I'm not above reinstalling. heck, it only takes a few minutes. it takes longer to correctly type in the correct email configuration only because I'm just learning networking correctly.
