Adding custom metadata for documents

Hello,

I'm a newbie with Alfresco, therefore it's easiest to throw this question on this forum 

So, concerning document-related metadata, what options is there in Alfresco to implement 20-30 custom metadata fields (attributes) to certain folders and documents? Can I define my own document attributes and add/display them directly in Alfresco application. Or does this require handling of xml-configuration files

I've been working through Jeff Pott's many great examples over on his blog site @ ecmarchitect.com. Here's a link to his article on defining a custom content model:
