Nuxeo Announces Release of LTS 2023

As content continues to grow exponentially in both size and complexity, enterprises need to evolve their content applications and infrastructures more profoundly and frequently. To address this, Hyland is proud to announce the release of the Nuxeo Platform LTS 2023. This latest long-term supported version ensures industry-leading content services at scale, as well as a streamlined upgrade experience.

Nuxeo Platform LTS 2023 delivers improved performance, resilience, and security by bringing major technical and version upgrades across the service and associated components. This release also provides new search options and consolidates streams management to Kafka.

Knowing that lengthy migrations interfere with agility, we are reinforcing our LTS release policy to ensure faster and more manageable upgrades. LTS versions will focus on core technical features and breaking upgrades, while other functionality will be delivered through hotfixes and marketplace packages. This will enable everyone in the community to benefit sooner and more easily from Nuxeo Platform LTS 2023.

Increased Performance and Maintainability Across the Stack

Hyland’s Nuxeo Platform will continue to deliver on its core technical promise. Key application components have been updated or changed to ensure industry-leading performance. This will also result in a better cloud deployment and monitoring experience.

The LTS 2023 technical highlights include:

  • Java 17 replaces Java 11, providing improved performance, security upgrades, and new language features and APIs.
  • MongoDB 6 brings improved performance, scalability, and stability, with new features such as simplified deployment and configuration options, with more frequent updates and security patches.
  • Kafka 3.3.1 provides improved performance, scalability, and stability, as well as new features such as a user interface for monitoring and managing Kafka clusters.
  • CentOS 7.x is replaced with Rocky Linux, providing improved compatibility, more frequent updates and security patches, while increasing flexibility and control over the operating system.

Options in Search

With LTS 2023, Nuxeo supports both OpenSearch (1.x) and ElasticSearch (7.x and 8.x) products, providing clients with the two leading options to choose from. OpenSearch is a powerful tool that allows clients to leverage their AWS infrastructure. ElasticSearch is a long-term partner that continues to innovate in search across infrastructure options. By offering both OpenSearch and ElasticSearch, Nuxeo enables clients to take advantage of the strengths of each product based on their needs.

Security

Hyland is committed to serving clients in secure environments such as the defense industries. We continue to address the needs of the most secure content, and remain compliant across geographies and with standards such as FedRamp. LTS 2023 applies a range of upgrades and fixes to remove all material security issues, as per CVSS v3.0 metrics. Hyland also continues to deploy industry-leading monitoring and interventions over the Nuxeo LTS lifecycle.

Streams Implementation Services

Hyland’s Nuxeo Platform standardizes the streams management services to Kafka. We will no longer officially support Redis implementations, our guidance being to use Kafka. The Chronicle Queue embedded service has been removed in the LTS 2023 version and replaced with in-memory for non-production purposes, and we recommend Kafka for production instances. This change allows our community to benefit from the full performance, resilience, and maintenance benefits of Kafka over time.

Release Cycles

Organizations should be able to access the value of LTS upgrades as soon and as easily as possible. This is particularly relevant for organizations who are required to use the latest available software and have strong limitations on when upgrade projects can be undertaken.

With LTS 2021, we announced that we would deliver more value through hotfixes on frequent release cycles, in parallel to LTS releases. Going forward, we are reinforcing this policy and will deliver the majority of user-facing and non-breaking upgrades through hotfixes and marketplace packages. LTS releases will focus on major technical changes and avoid adding elements that lengthen and complicate upgrades. The result will be lighter, faster LTS upgrades ensuring that more of our community benefits from a strong and common LTS base. This policy also provides flexibility for the deployment of other improvements, which can be implemented as part of an LTS upgrade project or as standalone implementations.

Compatibility constraints will remain between elements, as has always been the case. Going forward, most new features will only be compatible with LTS 2023 to fully leverage the Nuxeo Platform. For example, the Complex Media Manipulation feature to be released in Q3 2023 that will represent a big improvement in the ability to work with complex content in WebUI will only be compatible with LTS 2023.
