As of now, the official Activiti Modeler has indeed been deprecated, but there are a few options you can consider for modeling BPMN processes with Activiti 7 or 8:

1. Camunda Modeler: This is a popular choice for BPMN modeling and is compatible with Activiti. Camunda Modeler supports BPMN, CMMN, and DMN, making it versatile for various modeling needs.

2. Flowable Modeler: Similar to Activiti, Flowable is a fork of Activiti and provides a modeler that is still actively maintained. It allows for BPMN modeling and is a good alternative if you're looking for continued support.

3. BPMN.io: This is a web-based BPMN modeling tool that can export BPMN files. You can use it to create your models and then import them into Activiti.

Regarding the maintenance of Activiti, it's worth checking their official GitHub repository or community forums for the latest updates. While there may be periods without extensive documentation updates, the project is still active, and you can find community support and resources there.
