How can I reconcile the number of documents scanned to the number that appear in Alfresco?

Our users scan invoices. Then they appear in Alfresco. I would like to know how I can be sure that if the users scanned 100 documents, that all 100 show up in Alfresco. Also, the users may scan 50 documents at once (one .pdf), but they get separated out to 50 .pdf in Alfresco.

It would a good practice to add special type, aspect or property to your scans. So it would be easy to get the count of documents in a alfresco-query (i.e. alfresco share search). You need your special property and the "created" date (cm:created or so)
