I've seen "error loading items" for workflow and tasks before when an admin user who had outstanding "admin level" tasks was dropped from the admin role. In that case I was able to clear those tasks out with the Android app which for some reason still worked even though the web interface had issues. I'd presume that re-elevating the user, having him clean out his lists, then dropping him again would have worked to.
