how can i display a download count nearby the download button

Here is a link to the Alfresco SDK Examples, although I'm not 100% sure that is what you are looking for.

Realize that you are going to need to do back-end work as well as front-end work for this particular customization.

So once you decide how you want to persist the data on the back-end, you will also need to look into Share customizations (example).
