Trailing dot in folder name gives error and fails the REST API calls all together.

I experienced this in 6.1 enterprise and 6.2 community edition.

Step to replicate: Try to create any folder with a trailing dot (.), for example "Some Folder Name." (without quotes). 

Want to understand why its behaving like that and what is the remedy to resolve it?
