Strange warnings and performance problem

We are using Liferay 6.1.1 and Alfresco 3.2. Liferay has a HTTP client that talks to Alfresco. We have faced a strange problem; suddenly the service slowed down and server logs contains a lot of warnings like 'WARN  [activities.feed.AbstractFeedGenerator] Still busy …

Any idea about the root cause or workaround?

From time to time I used to experience this in such old Alfresco versions. I never got to know the real cause but those problems do not seem to appear in newer Alfresco versions, besides the stability and speed gain from Alfresco 3.x to 4.x is huge.

Might it be related to your DB pool configuration as suggested <a href="https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/MNT-3846">here</a>?
