path prefixes

I'm a bit confused with the prefixes in the paths.
e.g. to go /Company Home/Sites/broc/
I have to use:
/app:company_home/st:Sites/cm:broc/

And for my own user home space:
/app:company_home/cm:User_Homes/sys:jmaes

What are these 'app:', 'cm:', 'sys:' and 'st:' prefixes?
What other prefixes are possible?
And most importantly: how can I determine the correct path with the correct prefixes?
