Extend content model

Is there a tutorial available on how to extend a content model? To be specific I'm looking to extend the calendar Model to add more fields to the events(like participants, event type etc.,)
Pointer as to where to find the calendarModel.xml and tutorial on how to extend a content model would be helpful!
