aspect sys:aspect_root usage

Hi all,
Does anybody knows what are the impact(s) (pro(s) vs con(s)) when using/applying sys:aspect_root aspect to some business custom type?
What are behaviours induced under the hood at the repository level? (e.g. Lucene)

It seems complicated.
A lot of system aspects are not documented.
No one of Alfresco to give any answer ?
It's a shame.
