Windows XP Pro SP2 alfresco-community-tomcat-2.1.0.zip

hello, world!

I am an Alfresco and Java newbie who is looking for a good Java CMS.  I have downloaded and installed alfresco-community-tomcat-2.1.0.zip jdk-6 on my Windows XP Professional SP 2 machine with all Microsoft updates and jdk-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe.  When I try to run C:\alfresco\alf_start.bat as Administrator, I see a DOS box for a few seconds and then an error log file is created (example hs_err_pid5088.log follows).  I don't know what the problem is, or how to fix it.

Any suggestions?

This looks like Tomcat can't open port 8080 - do you have something already listening on that port?

Not as far as I know.  Turning off Windows Firewall and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>telnet localhost 8080

and then attempting to start Alfresco:

Did an Alfresco.log file get created? Anything useful in that?

It's quite strange that the Java process crashes completely - which would suggest something on your system that's conflicting with Java and/or it's ability to create network sockets.

What else have you got running on there security-wise? Anything that might interfere with network connections.

Looking in C:\alfresco, I don't see an Alfresco.log.  Searching C:\ found nothing.

I have at least one Java application (MapTool) that works both as a client and as a server.

I leave #1 turned off all the time.  I tried Alfresco both with #2-4 on and with #2-4 off.  I haven't tried turning #5 off and testing Alfresco, but I doubt that is the problem.


Have you validated Alfresco against jdk-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe on a fully-patched Windows XP Pro SP2 machine with directx-9.0c?

Try using JRE instead of JDK

    JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03\jre

and try to start Alfresco:

    The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly
    This environment variable is needed to run this program
    NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE


I'm not going to to spend any more time on Alfresco right now.

I had the same problem …  to fix this I did the following…

1. Rerun the java install (jdk-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe) , except this time do no install the JRE, make sure to uncheck it to have it uninstalled.
2. Remove JRE env variable (go to system properties -> advanced tab -> environment variables ) ; make sure JAVA_HOME has a value of "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03" ; click OK twice and reboot.
3. Go to dos prompt and rerun alf_start.bat; and it should launch.

Installation instructions look so simple, but one simple mistake can take a while to figure out!!!! Hope this helps.
