Rebuilding Indexes on Very Large Repositories

Alfresco 3.4d
Based on the posts I've been reading, my current issues can be likely resolved by rebuilding my indexes. The information available is not clear to me. So I have several questions about adding the index.recovery.mode=FULL to \Alfresco\Tomcat\Shared\alfresco-global.properties.

1. Is there away to monitor the process?
It sounds like this can take a really long time to complete and affects user access. A post for an earlier Alfresco version suggested there is a way to break this up so that it can be monitored and perform better.

2. Is there away to rebuild in small chuncks?
Since my repository is very large is it possible to do one folder at a time?

3. Is there documentation on this setting?
I haven't been able to find the documentation that explains this switch and alternative values. I've seen AUTO and would like to know what it means.

4. Is there a better way to fix things?
My symptoms are that system user records appear to be corrupt and through Share Folder are disconnected and files are missing (in Alfresco Explorer everything is there).

Re point 3) http://dev.alfresco.com/resource/docs/java/repository/org/alfresco/repo/node/index/FullIndexRecovery...
Thanks very much for this reference.

I think I would in general set Auto, however, would you know if my concern about user access during a rebuild is warranted? Specific to my situation would this be an issue if the system kicked off a full backup.
