I will cut and paste my working "alfresco-global.properties"

db.driver=org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver
db.username=alfresco
db.password=alfresco
db.name=chakra
db.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost/chakra?useUnicode=yes&characterEncoding=UTF-8

Also to make sure you dont have problem in mysql
try logging in from command line using
mysql -ualfresco -palfresco  chakra
If u can connect to the database and then getting mysql prompt, ur MySQL serve is working
else
check whether you have your mysql service running with default port
Please do update the status

I can't loggin to mysql, also i found out that the monitoring guys i spoke of earlier install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on this server, can they coexist together ? or will one take over the other, sorry I totally don't understand SQL at all. The mysql service is off, when i try to turn it on, it will just turn off itself after a few second.

Here I am not lobbying for Linux, but DM on Windows platform I will never do, A linux box will be far better
Now, I think  MySQL and MSSQL can co-exist, I have never tried it. but 100% it should work.
After starting the mysql service, search for windows OS log files and see why it is getting died, may be your window firewall is blocking the MySQL port, check it
Also, If would like to help you on Alfresoc DM installation on LINUX if you want to

I have zero knowledge of Linux also  Smiley Sad . I need a platform where I can provide future support for the company, so it will have to be windows. I have discuss with my managment & they have agreed to get a new server to run Alfresco on, but i still have to retrive the old datas inside the current Alfresco. I don't really want to mess around the old server any more because i might screw up other programs which are running fine at the moment, so is it possible to install the same version of Alfresco (3.3) on a temporary desktop pc & somehow move the settings & database from the server onto it ? I guess this approach would be much simpler right ?
After the new server arrive, i'm gonna try out the latest Alfresco 4.0 but i'll also have to move the old database into it.

Now that u mention about mysql, i seem to recall about a month ago, some people came over to install environment monitoring system for our test labs, and they install their data monitoring & collecting software at the same server alfresco is using, they were having problem installing mysql on the server, do u think it somehow mess up alfresco's sql ??

It sounds like they tried to install another instance of mysql when one was already running.    That may also be why alfresco's instance of mysql does not run.     You can run two instances of mysql on the same box - but is this what you want to do?

Moving an instance of alfresco from one box to another is covered by "Backup and Restore" in the documentation.

Hi mrogers,

Thanks for the reply.

You mean I can still follow the standard way of backing up & restoring even while the Alfresco is broken in its current state ??

It depends upon how it is "broken".   You will need mysql to be running to export the data.  At which point I suspect alfresco will be able to connect.

In my case, the sql isn't running and I have no knowledge of how it works or where it stores its files. aarrhhh…… :evil:

Truth is I have no idea. This Server together with alfresco has been running for at least 2 or more years already, i just came in 2 months ago, so i have no idea  :?: , the entire network was a bit of a mess also. Most of the time whenever i ran into any trouble, i had to trace what the previous technician was doing or trying to do then I find a more proper way to do it. But when it came to Alfresco, I have totally no idea.
How do i find out how the previous technician did the installation ??
