I thought I replied to this, but maybe not. The Alfresco Developer Guide from Packt just had a new edition published. I am biased because I am the original author of the first edition, but many people have started out their ramp-up by reading that book.

If you would rather read some free tutorials, I have many on my blog. Many of the chapters in the book come from those tutorials.
