What type of reports? Are you looking for audit type reports, reports on custom properties/metadata, activity reports, etc.

Open source/free?

Alfresco's Insight Engine does this: https://www.alfresco.com/ecm-software/search-and-insight-engine

Others have done it with Kibana.

I cannot recommend anything in particular except Alfresco Search and Insight Engine.

Many have used the reporting tool they use for other applications and run reports using that (Tableau, Cognos, etc.)
