You can use alfresco admin support tool to validate email configurations

Enterprise Edition

http://<your-host-name>:<alfresco-port>/alfresco/service/enterprise/admin

Community edition

http://<your-host-name>:<alfresco-port>/alfresco/s/admin

You can use your email address and content to test the email setting works or not...
