Difference between desktop sync client and desktop sync server

I have a requirement like desktop content should be in sync with alfresco repo . I observed like desktop sync client itself is enough for my requirement . Can any one suggest difference between desktop sync client and desktop sync server and which is relevant to my requirement among those two

As far as I know, you need both to actually make the desktop synch work... The difference is: one is the client part deployed on many workstations, the other is the server part, deployed into your infrastructure.
