Preview of GPX file in google maps

Hello,

I am trying to learn to customize alfresco and probably to extends its functionality. As a starter project I want to try to display a gpx file in google maps in alfresco.

I hope someone can give me a starting point, can I realize this by adding a new mime type or do I need to create an extension?
