Have you found the Alfresco Community Editions docs - these should provide you with a good overview of Alfresco Share, Alfresco Content Service (ACS) Community Edition and also Alfresco Records Management Community Edition.

The most urgent questions I have are:

Can we get this set up and operational without having to contract with expensive technical assistance?
If our web site is on a hosted shared server and Alfresco has to run on a local computer (per Tapp), Is this really a workable situation? It seems a tad flaky to me to go
