DB Locks in Activiti DB

We are getting DB deadlocks from Activiti DB in production environment. DBAs have identified several locks. One set of SQLs causing the locks is given below-Is there any solution for this? No idea if upgrading will resolve the issue as you haven't really identified the execution pattern.
Typically, ACT_RU_EXECUTION/ACT_GE_BYTEARRAY deadlocks only appear if you are updating the same variable in the same execution simultaneously. This is really not a great pattern.

However, upgrading can't hurt, your version is at least 3 years old and much has changed in that time.
