I'm having the exact same issue, after following the README_mysql.txt to a 'T'. It works perfectly when using its own SQLite DB, but if I try to use MySQL it fails with *exactly* the same verbiage as you. I've tried various versions of JRE/JDK, but with no improvements. Tomcat runs fine, but Alfresco is a no-go. Does anybody have any insight here?

Can you make sure that tomcat is fully down before trying to start alfresco?

Check to make sure there are no process hanging around

ps auxwww | grep java

If there are, kill them and then try to start Alfresco.
