    <description>&lt;HTML&gt;&lt;HEAD&gt;&lt;/HEAD&gt;&lt;BODY&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Hi, &lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Starting with the Latin Extended-A character set (&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"&gt;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters&lt;/A&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;) Activiti stores the special characters as a question mark i.e. ?.&amp;nbsp; However, all special characters leading up to the Latin Extended-A Character character set work fine i.e. ü = \u00fc, ñ = \u00f1, á = \u00e9.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;I tried the following with no luck:&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;=====================&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;1.&amp;nbsp; Created a servlet filter that would intercept all requests and responses to set the character encoding to UTF-8&amp;nbsp; &lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; request.setCharacterEncoding(""UTF-8"");&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;2.&amp;nbsp; Configured Tomcat's server.xml&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;Connector URIEncoding="UTF-8" connectionTimeout="20000" port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" redirectPort="8443"/&amp;gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;3.&amp;nbsp; Creation of tables inMySQL use:&amp;nbsp; DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Has anyone run into this issue?&amp;nbsp; Any ideas?&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Thank you,&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;John&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/BODY&gt;&lt;/HTML&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;HTML&gt;&lt;HEAD&gt;&lt;/HEAD&gt;&lt;BODY&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Are you talking about the Activiti Explorer or rather the engine on itself?&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;If it is the ui, then if I recall correctly, adding -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 in &lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;A href="http://catalina.bat/sh" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"&gt;catalina.bat/sh&lt;/A&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt; or set URIEncoding="UTF-8" is on the HTTP-connector in ${catalina.home}/conf/server.xml (which you seem to have done already)&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/BODY&gt;&lt;/HTML&gt;</description>
