Are the websites hosted close to each other (network wise)?

If so you could access the repository remotely using web services or web scripts on the Alfresco Server. Whether this would work for you will I guess depend on what the websites are doing and would need some performance testing / investigation.

Another option would be to use WCM and file deployment to the websites. Of course you would not have access to the repository on each website in this instance.

Alfresco doesn't need a portal. I think the answer to your question depends on how you want to "manage the sites" and what role you want alfresco to play.

If you want alfresco to simply act as a store for content
- You can mount a CIFS share and serve static content or web apps
- you can use the avm remote api, http and/or web services to get after the content in a remote repository,

If you just want to "manage" multiple sites WCM is all set – it comes with a mechanism for virtualizing web projects and deploying projects to different servers.

I think there are many topologies…. it just depends on what your goals are.
