Hi Paul,

with alf2.1 Com. you'll see a bug to open/change/save ppt or xls files with cifs. (is working good for 1.41) So an update on .ppt or .xls files is not possible.

:idea:
I think the problem is in handling *.tmp files used by powerpoint or excel in file updating (or replacing) process.

But ms word is working exelent, so it's ok how you handle ~ files.

I hope this helps to act on this critical issue.

When it comes to Office-integration how does the future plans look like?

- Support for Microsoft Office for Mac OS X?
- Support for OpenOffice running on Mac OS X?

(Edited this post when I read on the wiki that MS Word 2003 for Windows is supported only…)

Hi Andreas

We'll look into the tmp file problem with CIFS. We have to do some trickery to maintain the correct metadata with Office documents, because when you work with Office on a doc, it creates a tmp copy that is what you're working on, and then when you save, it deletes the original and moves the tmp file to the old name.

Thanks for the compliment on the Office integration. Our plans are to do the same basic idea on Excel and Powerpoint 2003, then also to the 2007 versions. I'm not sure what dev tools there are for Office on Mac, so that would need some investigation - I suspect it's not as straight-forward, as our add-in is effectively a browser control.

Hi,

I wondered if anyone can tell me a little bit more about the remote file-server deployment that is in beta in this release. From the release notes I read:

Remote File-server Deployment: Available as a server-side service only with RC1, provides support for transactionally deploying a Staging snapshot to one or multiple remote file servers installed with an Alfresco receiver (lightweight daemon / service). GUI integration and installers to come with future Community drops.

What is this server-side service exactly and how can I talk to it?

Is this related to the "DeploymentService" Java class as explained on the deployment page on the wiki?

PS: right now we are thinking of creating an rsync script that simply copies the contents of the appropriate CIFS AVM folder over to our external web server.

Congratulations, I am quite excited by this release - I really think our business could do with the pre-made portlets that this release is going to offer.

My question is, when do you think that the GA release will be made available? I couldn't see a date in the wiki?

I'm confused this discussion and the download links refer to 2.1 RC. But the main page refers to Community Edition 2.1 being available! So which is it?

Also I can't find anywhere a simple and clear explanation of what the "Native Office Integration" is. Does it mean that I no longer need to install OpenOffice for document transformation?

Both. The version that has just been released is Community Edition 2.1 Release Candidate.

No, you still need OO for transformations. The native Office integration is currently a plug-in for MS Word 2003 that facilitates check-in/out, search, workflow, etc. It's pretty impressive. I believe that other Office products and versions will be supported in future.

Hi,

Please note that the Excel and PowerPoint add-ins on the nightly server haven't been through our testing procedures - in fact, I've already fixed some installer issues so you'd be better off waiting for the 2.1 Final next week.

I cann't see this install file in the dowloads directory or the /downloads/nightly/dist directory?
