Given the error you are seeing it looks like your database has not started.

Try connecting to MySQL from the command line to verify that your database is running. Once you can connect try starting Tomcat again and accessing :8080/alfresco.

Had the same problem, solved it now

mysql did not allow network connections on my Slackware system.
Remove SKIP line from
/etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld

and it should go
