The first is to take advantage of the natural federation capabilities of Lucene. A query against the Lucene index can execute against multiple indexes. To support this, we are designing an identifier addressability capability in line with emerging content management standards (iECM and JSR-283). In addition, another approach we are considering is similar to those employed by AskOnce and Venetica, and that is to provide a federation layer that parcels out queries to underlying repositories.
