Hello.

Some time ago I?ve been evaluating Alfresco

Since all other systems in our company use Firebird as a database back-end I?ve decided to move Alfresco to Firebird.

Here are the steps:

    * install FB2.0RC SS (Win32)
    * add JayBird jar to appropriate location
    * change connection string params in Alfresco xml configuration files
    * change Hibernate SQL dialect to FirebirdDialect in its properties files

That?s all. Hibernate creates all the required tables, etc.

Time required is about 30 min on a clean database (without porting existing records).

FB1.x cannot be used because of index size limits - it cannot handle
char-enocded GUIDs (a pair of them in one index) if the database is UTF8.

A for performance, I cannot say for sure, because we?ve just evaluated a product without heavy load. But at the first glance FB is slightly faster.

Maxim.

Hello. Some time ago I?ve been evaluating AlfrescoSince all other systems in our company use Firebird as a database back-end I?ve decided to move Alfresco to Firebird. Here are the steps: * install FB2.0RC SS (Win32) * add JayBird jar to appropriate location * change connection string params

Hi.

It's me who actually posted this message to Firebird suport list.
It was a reaction to a question about experience in migration of projects from other DBMSs to Firebird.

It's copy-and-pasted correctly. But note that I don't emphasize the performance. The point is that it's very easy to migrate and there is no performance problems and it LOOKS LIKE Firebird behaves better - without precise testing. But note that we have years experience ajusting Interbase/Firebird performance since we use it in business-critical applications. We have no such experience with MySQL.

Currently Alfresco undergoes more heavy investigation because we are considering it as our primary CMS option for 2007+. The platform will be 2xOpteron(double-core each), 4G RAM, 16xSATA-II 500GB RAID6 disks. As of OS we haven't decided yet between Win64 and Gento (AMD64). Expected load is about 200 users total.

If anybody interested I could post some sort of report by the end of November.

Just to clarify.

Maxim Shiryaev

I just found that Firebird is a better choice than hsql in term of portable db since the db has wider accessing methods, such as JDBC, ODBC, ADO.NET, C/C++ API. I need to have our .NET components talking to Alfresco DB.

It's great to hear that you have tried it successfully ! Do you have any idea how Firebird+Alfresco perform in medium scale businesses (5-10K documents per day) ? How fast is Firebird compared to mysql ?

I appreciate if you could share your experience about integrating Firebird with Alfresco. We are in deciding phase to pick a right DBMS.
