Problem facing when try to preview the index.jsp page

hi i am new to Alfresco,I tried to walk my way through the WCM-Tutorial, but got stuck on page 20. When I click on preview of index.jsp i am facing the following error on my browser.Unable to connectFirefox can't establish a connection to the server at www-alfresco-www–bob.avm.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescod

Hi, I`m not sure but I think your problem is that you must start the alfresco Virtualization Sever and then it must work.

Alsp please make sure that the hostname resolves to correct IP address by adding something like below to your hosts file

www-alfresco-www–bob.avm.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net 127.0.0.1

There is no need to alter your 'hosts' file in any way at all.
Only in the very earliest pre-pre-pre-release version of Alfresso
was this ever necessary (even then, it was just a quick hack to
demonstrate a "proof of concept" and nothing more).

Wildcard-DNS name resolution is now handled in a very scalable way;
I strongly suggest upgrading your server to a supported release.

Hi Jcox,
Agree with you about that - if we configure proper name server and make client machine point to that, there is no need for hosts file.
For a developer who just want to do a temporary but entire configuration on their laptops - and work behind firewalls and proxies - possibly hosts file is an easier way - but with the addition pain of having to add a hosts file entry per .

Is it possible to change the preview URL from

admin.www-alfresco-www–bob.avm.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net:8180
to something like

admin.pranshu.com:8180

Pranshu,

If you want to work on a machine with no access to the internet
(thus precluding using XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX.ip.alfrescodemo.net
as your virtualization domain), then you should set up your own
name server (or reconfigure your existing one) so that it includes
a wildcard domain for virtualization. If you rely on a hack like
editing /etc/hosts with some pain you'll be able to set things up
for a static set of users & staging areas, but reviewers will *never*
be able to preview content that comes to them via a workflow.
This is because workflows use ephemeral AVM stores with
ephemeral DNS names – it's an ever-changing set of GUIDs.
Unfortunately, there's no way to create a DNS wildcard in the
"hosts" file… you must use a nameserver (e.g.: Djbdns, or BIND).

As mentioned in:
http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Configuring_the_Virtualization_Server
you can configure BIND on windows or UNIX to create a wildcard
DNS domain for virtualization. If you're on a UNIX platform,
you have at least two free/common options: BIND and Djbdns.

My own preference on UNIX is to use Djbdns (tinydns + dnscache)
because it's more secure, stable, better designed, and elegant.
A fresh set of horrible security issues are discovered with each
new release of BIND, but not a single security flaw has been
seen in Djbdns for the past few years – despite a $500 reward.

If you go with Djbdns, be warned that the docs are only so-so,
and the config may strike you as a little strange at first
(Daniel Bernstein has a different approach to daemons than
most folks in the world of UNIX). It may take you a day or two
in order to feel like you've got the whole thing under your belt.

There's no denying one thing: DJB's programs are well thought-through
and executed with a level of care that has won him a devoted following.
If you try it, I think you'll like it.
