Use and get familiar with the MySQL database.
Also, you can use the full repository export and bootstrap import to backup and restore in a database-independent way.

Hi,

The contractor is going to upgrade my server this weekend and will need to backup and restore my Alfresco. I have installed 2.0 with the HSQLDB. I have not read the wiki article yet but if you have any input from your experience with the backup (pointers, tips, what to avoid etc.) would be great.

Hi,

You don't say which version you are running (1.4, 2.0, Open, Enterprise) and it is relevant. Post the line from the logs that gives these details as there have been bug fixes in various stages of release.

If you're an enterprise customer then you'll probably want to wait for the 1.4.3 release before doing the migration. In particular, large data sets during full repo export and import and a workaround for a data flush issue during large transactions are going into the 1.4.3, which will be released for Enterprise customers soon.

If you're not an Enterprise customer, then you'll have to wait a bit longer before the bug fixes are available. If your data size is not too large, then you'll probably be fine, either way. Give your system loads of memory and apply the workaround for bug 1280.

Hi Derek,

I am running Community

Installed Version   2.0.0 (build-185)‍

and took some sizes from the properties which I'm not to sure what they are:

heap.free   62.453MB (65487272 bytes)
heap.maxsize   506.313MB (530907136 bytes)
heap.size   126.750MB (132907008 bytes)‍‍‍

I have only had Alfresco running for about a month, so I do not think it is too big (I hope) and I'll get the IT staff to do some export/imports on a developers machine before he does it to the server.

Just apply the bug workaround, give the machine a bit more memory (if required) and it should work.
