If one wishes to delete a user, is it possible to configure alfresco to delete that user's home space automatically on deletion of the user and how?

There is no config for this feature, please raise it in JIRA. For now this would require a code change to the method deleteOK() in the following class:
org.alfresco.web.bean.users.UsersBean
