Update:

I managed to solve the above problem by replacing the commons-logging.jar file distributed with JBoss with the one from the alfresco-community-jboss-1.4.0.tar.gz distribution. This file has to be replaced in the $JBOSS_HOME/lib, $JBOSS_HOME/client, and $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/lib directories.

Apparently the current distribution of JBoss includes a copy of this file that is incompatible with Alfresco 1.4.0. Downgrading to the older version fixed all problems.
