Problem was port 3690 was blocked on our firewall. For those who no nothing about svn(me) perhaps this would be a good hint to have on the svn download page ? alternatively using the http protocol would be a better approach or is alfresco trying to limit the who can access the code? Most people would have port 3690 blocked I believe.

Thanks to all who tried to help

Dave
