I think the only thing you can go by is the version history for a particular file.

If you have a lot of documents, this is a bit cumbersome. You have to check the version history of every file.

I want to express my concern a little more specific:
People need to be able to work on documents in Off-line mode(as some of them do external work and do not always have Internet
connection). When it comes to merging an Offline edited document back into the DMS, how about conflict handling? What features
is Alfresco offering in that area?

Currently Alfresco is an online system. The offline solution is being worked on now.

Can you please tell me how long it takes until this new feature is integrated?
Is it possible to get a message in Alfresco, which tell me that files were recently modified? Has Alfresco some kind of conflict resolution?
