alfresco seems more and more a program which purpose is to drive the admin crazy.. migration from an older version using mysql up to a version using postgresql seems impossible even with 3rd party application.. exporting acp files and import them into a newer version of alfresco is also not supported..

Can someone tell me how i ever should upgrade alfresco?

so pls can some alfresco professional tell me how i EVER should upgrade.. even when i try to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.2 seems impossible.. acp didnt work, this so called "cold backup" procedure didnt work..

[Edit - Moderator - removed shouting from post.]

I suggest that you don't try to upgrade and convert from MySql to PostgresSQL at the same time. Upgrade using MySql first.

I just replace the alfresco.war and share.war files. Alfresco handles the upgrade itself. However I'm a developer and only have test data.

The "official" upgrade advice is basically just a backup and restore. Yes people have problems, but once they understand what's going on its simple.

You have the additional issue that you are already using MySql (and 4.2 ships with Postgressql by default) so you need to do the extra step of adding the mysql driver by adding the mysql connector to the tomcat/lib directory. And then changing your alfresco-global.properties file to use your mysql database rather than postgressql.

So if you are migrating data from one system to another you first need to identify what you want to migrate and any data conversion that is necessary.

For example some questions:
do you want to preserve associated stuff like version history or comments?
are the metadata models the same between the two systems
are the user ids the same ?
do you have any access control rules.

Then you can use an ETL tool, some custom code or some or other route like bulk import or FTP.

You could also upgrade your 4.0 instance to 4.2 then use ACP import/export.

If your requirements are very simple you could simply FTP your word documents and PDF files between the two systems. That won't work for the wiki which depends upon a custom model, so ACP import/export is probably the easiest way to go for that.

Just a suggestion….this might be way out in left field, but what about doing a mass export of your files and then just import them into the new server?

It might take a lot of time if you have 1000's of docs, but it might be an alternative as well.

[edit]
I just seen where you tried the acp…have you just tried doing webdav?

thnx eswbitto for ur reply.. i did import most (lets say about 90%) of the documents via webdav.. worked quite well. but the wiki was such a pain.. but i can confirm that via webdav all of the documents could be migrated. the only problem i have are the wiki sites.. i dont know why but when i copy them via webdav (for example main_page) no content will be shown.. its an empty page.
