To get started just use something like notepad or an xml editor. There is a graphical modeller for jbpm and activiti that you can use as and when you need them.

There is Activiti Kickstart, an Eclipse plugin to ease the creation of Activiti Workflows and deploy them to Alfresco.

It's a separated project. It will make easier the work:
