Which action did you use? "Start Workflow" or "Execute Javascript".

Prior to 1.4 community final, there was a bug which meant the "Start Workflow" action appeared in the Rule wizard. It shouldn't as there's no UI to configure it usually resulting in the exception you've reported.

If you're using javascript, can you post your script.

I download last week the bundle: alfresco-community-jboss-1.4.0. This happens if define the rule "start workflow" to all items in a space. No javascript.

I really thought this was fixed, so have just checked. Unfortunately, the fix missed the community final train.

You must use a script action to start an advanced workflow - see http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/WorkflowAdministration#Step_7:_Integration_with_Rules_.28Optional.29
