Is there any way of ascertaining the version of Alfresco I'm currently running via the SQL DB?

No. The version is dependent upon the code, not the database schema number. There is a schema number in the database, however a given schema can apply to many different alfresco versions.

It goes in the log at start up? Will this do or do you need to get it interactively?
