When the master document is opened or printed, it pulls the content from the sub-documents and creates a single document. One of the issues with this is that the sub-documents have to be all in the same folder. If such a client application is able to include references to other documents that may be stored on a server in an arbitrary location and pull them when necessary (maybe via CMIS) then this is possible. You would have to develop any kind of aggregation logic yourself.
