Apologies,

I have now downloaded the latest version of Alfresco Community. I take it that if I am not worried about losing any content, there would be no issue in uninstalling 4.0.0 and installing 4.2.0?

Theres no reason that you can't run 4.0.0 on a later version of Tomcat. Its just that that the version specified is the version used for testing. And there are lots of changes since 4.0.0 so that has its own merits.

If you just want to upgrade your Tomcat to the latest 6.0 version, it should be sufficient to copy over the Tomcat .jar files and restart.
Otherwise, an upgrade from 4.0 to 4.2 should be pretty painless (of course, a working backup is a good thing. On the other side, it is always good to have a backup).
And of couse: it depends if and how much customizations you have applied to Alfresco.
I just cant tell how to this with one of the installers, haven't use them for ages 🙂

Cheers
Gyro

Just running the installer will not do the trick.
Also replacing the .war files didn't work for me. Might be because 4.2 uses Tomcat 7 now.

See this post, worked fine for me.
http://www.fossoffice.com/en/2012/10/31/alfresco-community-upgrade/
