Configuration a network share for storing User generated content

Hi,I want to configure a NAS share as storage for user generated content in Alfresco.I tried to change $TOMCAT_HOME/shared/classes/alfresco-global.properties file (dir.root in particular) but it doesn't work, rather if I set dir.root to NAS share (mapped as Y:\ drive), login to Admin console starts

I am still not able to find a resolution to this problem.
Basically I want to move alf_data folder to a network file system. Currently its in the Alfresco install directory: C:/Alfresco/alf_data.

Everytime I try to modify 'dir.root' parameter in C:/Alfresco/tomct/shared/classes/alfresco-global.properties file to remote files system as X:/alf_data. It start giving me errors.
Is it possible to move this alf_data folder outside the install directory.
I will appreciate any inputs, hints, suggestion.

I browsed through forum and found several users having issues with configuring Network File system. In my case, if I assign dir.root to any location on my local system it works perfectly fine. Problem comes only when I try to assign a mapped drive from a NAS appliance. Any input/pointers will be very welcome. Thanks.
